Letter from the Editor I have failed at a lot of things in my life, things that most people seem to excel at like school and relationships. Most people are never good at everything. Sometimes, failure is inevitable. What do you learn from your failure? In her commencement speech to Harvard University in 2008, what J. K. Rowling said about learning from your failures, “The knowledge that you have emerged wiser and stronger from setbacks means that you are, ever after, secure in your ability to survive. You will never truly know yourself, or the strength of your relationships, until both have been tested by adversity. Such knowledge is a true gift, for all that it is painfully won, and it has been worth more to me than any qualification I ever earned.” Some people become humbled by their failure, others more driven not to fail again. Others become beaten by their failure. Failure drives these people to fear. They become fearful of ever trying anything again. I use to be one of those people. I became afraid of failure so I stopped doing the one thing that gave me joy, writing. I stopped because I was afraid that people would think I wasn’t any good. I was afraid of showing my writing to anyone, but most of all, I was afraid of failure. I had failed at other things in my life and I didn’t want to fail at something that brought me contentment. One day I pulled out my notebook and started writing. While I was writing, I realized that the only failure here was the failure of not doing something I loved. Don’t let failure drive you into fear. Learn from your failure, but most of all accept that failure is a part of life. Welcome to the Litearti! Now let’s get down to business. |
